The Different Types of Camera Lenses

April 10, 2020

Photos have the special power to stop time at one particular moment. The captured image is showcased throughout the years. This fascinating characteristic of photos developed my passion for photography and made it one of my favorite hobbies.  As I continue to develop my skills in the art of freezing time, there is one question that haunts me constantly: am I using the correct type of lens? I am sure that many other photographers doubt their lenses as they are capturing photos. Therefore in order to reach a solution to this issue, I developed a list of categories of lenses to suggest the ideal lens depending on the situation.

The All-Purpose Lens that is perfect for all occasions: Zoom Lens

Zoom lenses are the type of lenses that usually come in the set of the camera that one purchases. These lenses are the most used by photographers in several situations, serving as all-purpose-lenses for a wide range of events. Most of these lenses consist of a wide range of zoom from 18 mm to 200 mm. These lenses are used to capture images, both far and close. Zoom lenses are usually used by photographers to capture portraits from a distance and are ideal for sports photography. This type of lens ranges from a value of 100-200 dollars with a rating of 4.5 stars on many credible websites, such as Amazon and Canon. Based on my experience of using this type of lens, I can assure that the lens can always be relied upon to take astonishing pictures at minimal cost, and serve a variety of purposes.

Professional Use to Manipulate Sizes: The Macro Lens and the Telephoto Lens

The Macro Lenses

Macro lenses are the type of lenses that are usually only used by professional photographers. Macro lenses serve to magnify the microorganisms living amongst us. Most of these lenses consist of a fixed range of zoom that cannot be changed, the zoom factor must be chosen by the customer at the time of purchase. These lenses are used to capture enlarged images of actualities that are too small to be seen with the naked eye. Macro lenses are usually used by photographers to capture images from a  close distance, and enlarge the actuality. Some of the actualities that are captured using these lenses are bugs and food. These types of lenses range from a value of 300-2000 dollars, depending on the zoom factor, with a rating of 5 stars on many influential websites, such as Amazon and Canon.

Telephoto Lenses

Telephoto lenses are also another type of lens, which is usually used by professional photographers. Telephoto lenses serve to reduce the distance between the camera and the subject that is being captured. Most of these lenses consist of a wide range of zoom that can be changed. Telephoto lenses are usually used by photographers to capture images from a great distance, and lessen the distance through the usage of these types of lenses. Some of the subjects that are captured using these lenses are wild animals that are a threat to be close to, and constellations and other fascinating elements of nature that cannot be experienced to its capabilities with our eyes alone. These types of lenses range from a value of 200-12000 dollars, depending on the zoom range, with an average of 4.5 stars on many influential websites, such as Amazon and Canon.

The Ideal Candide and Portrait Picture: Prime Lens

Have you ever wondered how an Instagram model has a great candid or portrait picture? The answer to that question is that they probably used a prime lens. Prime lenses are used by many photographers as they attempt to capture a portrait or candid picture. Prime lenses require photographers to approach close to the subject. Prime lenses have a fixed range of zoom, and the customer has to decide the apt zoom factor at the time of purchase. The prime lenses have a wide aperture, which allows more light to be captured, this allows great photos when light is not available. Night photography is done through the usage of prime lenses. However, there are great limitations to the prime lenses as they can only be served to take portraits and candid shots, and cannot be used for anything else. Prime lenses range from a value of 200-2000 dollars, depending on the zoom range, and have an average of 5 stars on many influential websites, such as Canon and Amazon.  Based on my experience of using these type of lenses, I can assure that these lenses can always be relied upon to take astonishing portraits of people, and serve for a variety of lighting. The lens is ideal for vast types of lighting from the early sunrise to the pitch-black nightlife.

Group photos and Panorama:

Wide-Angle Lenses and Fisheye Lenses are preferred by many photographers when they are taking group photos. Wide-angle and fisheye lenses can include more surroundings in the image and have the subject in the foreground stand out. Wide-angle lenses are used to produce grandeur images by setting the focus on the center along with the sides and background, whereas the fisheye lenses set the focus on the center of the frame. Wide-angle lenses are used for small group candid pictures along with city landscapes to shift the focus to the center of the group and wane the background. However, the wide-angle is used to capture panoramic pictures of a large group, as well as landscape pictures. Wide-angle lenses range from a value of 200-2000 dollars, depending on the zoom range, and have an average of 5 stars on many influential websites, such as Canon and Amazon. Fisheye lenses range from a value of 300-3000 dollars, depending on the zoom range, and have an average of 5 stars on many influential websites, such as Canon and Amazon. Based on my experience of using the wide-angle lenses, I can assure that these lenses can always be relied upon to take astonishing landscape pictures.

Photography is one of the most popular hobbies for people throughout the world, including me. Lenses are the most prominent method in which one can manipulate the image being produced.  I hope everyone who captures images using a DSLR camera uses the accurate lens to get the most memorable remembrance of that particular time.
