Classroom Confiscation

On Tuesday February 20, 2018 at 6PM in the NHHS auditorium, an LAUSD-sponsored community meeting will convene to discuss the potential co-location of an independent public charter school on the campus of North Hollywood High School for the 2018-19 school year. Under Prop. 39, NHHS would be required to concede 14 classrooms and release common area spaces by 15%. The following areas would be affected:

Potenital Spaces Lost

• Science Olympiad/Robotics Facilities

• Computer Labs

• Leadership Workrooms

• Parent Center

• Weight Room

• College Center and Adjacent Facilities

• Classrooms used less than five periods daily (e.g. Mr. Bradbury's room)

Potential Shared Facilities

• Library

• Auditorium

• Athletic Facilities

The Music Room would likely be required to house two "floater" classes, meaning that desks and chairs would have to be installed. The performance space in the middle of the music room is the key to its function: performing ensembles such as the jazz band, band, orchestra, and indoor drumline would be forced to rehearse in the midst of furniture and excess materials.

The primary issue is that the district is applying the loosely-defined term, "unused," recklessly to spaces that are indeed, used. Convincing the powers that be of this will be key in retaining some of our school's primary extracurricular facilities.

This heinous proposal diverts vital resources from a Title I school in order to funnel more money into the pockets of the school district. NHHS cannot afford to host an additional 330 students.

Attend the public meeting, spread the word about this proposal, and make your voice heard. Other schools have successfully fought off such garbage in the past. We can too.
