In Defense of Dungeons and Dragons

Historically, Dungeons and Dragons has experienced a lot of opposition. Some ultra religious organizations even accuse Dungeons and Dragons players of Satan worship, and the fact that someone played Dungeons and Dragons was used in court to try to prove they were a murderer. Despite this, many continue to play this role-playing game, and anyone with an open mind can enjoy Dungeons and Dragons. Playing Dungeons and Dragons is an invaluable way to develop crucial skills that could be useful for the rest of your life. Not only does it expand one’s imagination through tasks such as creating a character and designing a campaign, it also polishes one’s teamwork and cooperation skills, as it is a cooperative storytelling experience in which you and your fellow players craft a story together. Whether you’re a mighty orc barbarian in a loincloth wielding a mighty club or a nimble elven wizard blasting the enemies with spells and dodging incoming attacks, the only limit is your imagination; you can potentially accomplish anything while crafting a great story. Furthermore, if you take on the challenging role of the Dungeon Master, the storyteller who creates the world and arbitrates the players’ actions, you take control of the story, crafting an adventure that takes place anywhere and features a wide variety of enemies as well as friends. Dungeon Masters enjoy the unique experience of watching others explore their world and discover its secrets. If you’ve been enticed and want to try Dungeons and Dragons, join the Tabletop Games Club in your very own North Hollywood High School and try it out.
